The Art of Imperfect Adulting podcast is coming soon to earbuds near you (hopefully they will be your earbuds). Here’s a little bit about the project to help you understand what it’s all about.
Navigating the murky waters of adulting is a shared experience, but finding relatable stories that resonate can often feel elusive. Enter “The Art of Imperfect Adulting,” a podcast dedicated to illuminating the real-life journeys and experiences of everyday adults. Hosted by Amy Stone, this podcast strips away the gloss and grime to reveal the raw yet inspiring elements of what it means to be an adult today.

Breaking the Perfection Illusion
In a world dominated by the illusion of perfection and train wreck avalanches, finding relatable, balanced narratives is helpful…but can be tough to actually accomplish.
Amy highlights this challenge: “In our very modern world, we are surrounded, dare I say bombarded with information. And I find that most of the content for adulting stories falls into one of two camps. The first is what I call the perfection illusion…the second is the train wreck avalanche”
In Amy’s opinion neither extreme truly captures the ordinary, nuanced experiences of adult life.
The Power of Vulnerability
The heart of “The Art of Imperfect Adulting” lies in shared experiences and authenticity. Amy emphasizes the potency of personal stories in fostering connection and understanding.
Referring to Brene Brown’s influential work, Amy shares: “She [Brown] talks a lot about the power and responsibility of sharing our personal stories. And I happen to have seen that power myself in my own life when I share stories from my experiences.”
Our collective experiences may vary, but the underlying emotions and challenges often resonate deeply, creating a ripple effect of shared understanding and support.
Finding the In-Between: Normalizing the Everyday
Most of us don’t live in high-definition highlights or perpetual crises. We exist in the spaces in between. Amy’s mission is to explore these ordinary moments and derive meaning from them.
Amy explains, “What we really want is to find another person like us, but who has had a similar experience, someone who can give us the inside scoop. I call these adultier adults.”
By focusing on the commonplace struggles and successes, the podcast aims to make listeners feel less isolated and more connected to a broader community of “adultier adults.”
As Amy eloquently says, “When we actually hear the stories of other people who have something in common with us, we tend to feel a lot less weird, a lot less alone, and hopefully a lot more happy.”
